SH-135 uses W-beam guardrail on curves and bridge approaches throughout the Slate River valley. The lower sections through the valley have timber-post W-beam in agricultural areas, transitioning to strong-post systems on steeper terrain approaching Crested Butte. CDOT Region 3 manages this corridor from the Gunnison maintenance facility.

Crested Butte is approximately 145 miles from our Colorado Springs office via US-285 and US-50 through Gunnison. It is not accessible via any route under 130 miles from our offices. For extended projects, we stage equipment at Gunnison to eliminate the 28-mile daily drive on SH-135.
