Salida is positioned between the Royal Gorge canyon of US-50 to the east and Monarch Pass to the west — two of the most demanding highway barrier environments in CDOT Region 2. The canyon section of US-50 through the Royal Gorge has narrow roadway and cliff-edge exposures requiring specialized barrier anchor systems, while Monarch Pass uses mountain highway W-beam on sustained 9% grades.
